Morocco skipper Romain Saiss announces retirement from international football

It was clear that Romain Saiss would no longer be part of the Atlas Lions of Morocco’s future. He started the opening game of the 2025 AFCON against Comoros but lasted only 19 minutes due to injury.

Jawad El Yamiq replaced Saiss, and he did not make an appearance in the run to the finals, where he was able to occupy a slot on the bench against Senegal.

The 35-year-old French-born has been the captain of the Moroccan national team since 2019, having led the country to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African to do so.

On Tuesday, 24th February, the long-serving captain announced his retirement from the national team after almost 14 years of service. The veteran defender won 86 caps for Morocco, and his announcement is considered a big blow due to his vast experience.

Saiss’s announcement on social media

“Dear fans of Morocco. Today, I close the most beautiful chapter of my football life. After careful consideration, it is with immense emotion that I announce my international retirement,” Saiss wrote on his Instagram account.

“Wearing the colours of Morocco and becoming its captain will remain the greatest honour of my career. For me, this jersey transcends sport: it’s a story of roots, family, and heart.

“Every time I’ve worn it, I’ve felt the weight of responsibility, but above all, an indescribable pride. As a child, I dreamed of these moments.

“I’ve always given everything for this flag and for this country that has given me so much, constantly guided by love for our nation and respect for its people.”

How will Morocco cope without him?

Romain Saiss has partnered with Nayef Aguerd at the heart of Morocco’s defence for more than four years, so his absence will be a big blow with less than 110 days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In his absence at the 2025 AFCON, Walid Regragui, the head coach of Morocco, chose the 33-year-old El Yamiq Jawad of Real Zaragoza, so it is like he will partner Aguerd in the World Cup.

Pyramids of Egypt’s dependable centre back Chibi Mohamed, is someone who is ready-made to also fill any gap at the centre back role.

19-year-old Rennes defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal will be in contention for a place in Regragui’s squad for the USA, Canada and Mexico. Manchester United’s Noussair Mazraoui could also be an option.

Morocco will definitely miss his leadership because he has been the main man at the back for the Atlas Lions. Morocco in Group C will face Brazil, Scotland and Haiti in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
