Head coach Aboubakar Ouattara of Hearts of Oak has made it clear that avoiding relegation is his top priority for the upcoming season, rather than aiming for a league title.
The Phobians had a tumultuous campaign last season, narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day with a comeback win over Bechem United.
In a recent interview, Ouattara emphasized the need to strengthen his squad before the new season kicks off, having already signed four new players, including goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, Samuel Amofa, and former Nations FC duo Asamoah Boateng Afriyie and Michael Awuah Mensah.
“My target is to ensure we don’t battle relegation next season. The supporters always want us to win, and any big team is expected to compete for trophies. But for now, our main focus is to build a solid team and avoid the relegation zone,” he said.
Ouattara also acknowledged that fan expectations can be high, but stressed the importance of stability and gradual improvement.
“In football, fan agitation is normal. Man proposes, but God disposes. For instance, Wydad Casablanca and ASEC Mimosa, who are typically strong teams, have faced crises and failed to qualify for continental competitions. We need to focus on stability and gradual improvement. I can’t guarantee a trophy next season, but I am committed to building a team that can compete and stay clear of relegation.”
Despite losing the maiden Democracy Cup to bitter rivals Asante Kotoko, Ouattara remains committed to building a team that can compete and stay clear of relegation. With the upcoming season just around the corner, it remains to be seen if Hearts of Oak can turn things around under Ouattara’s leadership.
