During the league trophy presentation at the Jubilee House on August 2, 2023, President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed his commitment to support Medeama SC in their 2023/2024 CAF Champions League campaign with a pledge of GH¢1 million.
The President made the announcement in the presence of a delegation led by George Mireku Duker, Deputy Minister for Mines and Natural Resources, and Member of Parliament for Takwa.
The delegation also included chiefs from the Apinto Traditional Council, Dr. Tony Aubynn, the club’s Board Chairman, Head Coach Evans Augustine Adotey, other management and technical team members, as well as the players.
Medeama SC will be competing against Nigeria’s Remo Stars in the Champions League preliminary round on August 20 at the Cape Coast Stadium, with the return leg scheduled for August 27.
President Akufo-Addo praised Medeama for their outstanding performance in winning the Ghana Premier League and congratulated them for their first-ever league trophy.
He acknowledged the team’s historic achievement, ending the Western Region’s 47-year wait for a league title since Sekondi Hasaacas’ victory in 1977.
“Congratulations to you, the captain, and the members of the team for this historic achievement. It’s been 47 years since a team from the Western Region won the cup. This is great. You’ve done a great job. Congratulations,” expressed President Akufo-Addo.
The President assured the club of his support and wished them success in their continental engagements for the year.
“I will try to provide a million Ghana Cedis to help you in the CAF campaign. The deputy minister insists that if I’m in Ghana on the 20th, I should come to Cape Coast. I’ll see. We’ll do our best to assist in your continental engagements this year, to ensure you have a successful tilt,” said President Akufo-Addo.
