Nana Yaw Amponsah to be named Asante Kotoko CEO

Asante Kotoko SC are reportedly on the verge of reappointing Nana Yaw Amponsah as Chief Executive Officer, with strong indications that his return is fast gaining approval within the club’s newly constituted board.

Emerging reports suggest that the board—led by Mr. Kwasi Osei Ofori, James Osei Brown, and Dr. Kofi Amoa-Abban—has identified Amponsah as the frontrunner to take charge of the club’s day-to-day operations in the coming days, as they look to stabilise leadership at the Kumasi-based giants.

Kotoko have been without a substantive CEO since Amponsah was dismissed in 2023, and his potential return now signals a major shift in the club’s administrative direction.

However, the decision is not straightforward, as former Ashanti Gold Chief Executive and Ghana Football Association Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong remains a strong contender for the role, setting up a closely contested race for one of Ghana football’s most powerful administrative positions.

Amponsah, a lawyer and respected football administrator, has remained active on the international stage since leaving Kotoko. After his exit, he joined Moldovan side FC Petrocub as president, where he delivered remarkable success.

Under his leadership, Petrocub secured a historic domestic double in the 2023/2024 season and qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. He also oversaw the end of Sheriff Tiraspol’s long dominance in the Moldovan Super Liga, marking a significant shift in the country’s football landscape.

Before his stint abroad, Amponsah served as Kotoko CEO for three years, during which he guided the club to a Ghana Premier League title.

He also previously contested for the Ghana Football Association presidency in 2019 but was defeated by Kurt Okraku.

As the board weighs its final decision, Kotoko’s next CEO appointment is expected to have a major impact on the club’s long-term sporting and commercial direction.
