Ghana defender Nicholas Opoku made his official debut for UD Las Palmas on Tuesday night, helping the Spanish side secure a 3-1 victory over RSD Alcala after extra time in the first round of the Copa del Rey.
The 29-year-old centre-back was named in the starting line-up for the away fixture, marking his first competitive appearance for the Canary Islands club since joining in August 2026 on a two-year contract.
Opoku joined Las Palmas after his contract with Turkish club Kasımpaşa expired. However, visa complications and an injury setback delayed his debut, forcing him to wait before making his first appearance for the Spanish outfit.
The Ghana international delivered a solid performance at the back as Las Palmas overcame their opponents to book a place in the next round of the competition.
Kirian Rodríguez scored twice, while Manuel Fuster added another goal to secure the 3-1 win for Las Palmas. Luis Simon scored the only goal for RSD Alcala.
Despite the victory, Opoku suffered a setback when he picked up a knock in the 73rd minute and was replaced by Taisei Miyashiro.
The defender will be hoping to recover quickly from the injury concern and return to action when Las Palmas face Real Oviedo next weekend in the Spanish Segunda División.
His debut represents an important step after a delayed start to life at the club, with the Ghanaian expected to compete for a regular place in the Las Palmas defence as the season progresses.
