Nigeria’s U20 national team, the Flying Eagles, have reportedly been placed on standby by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a possible place at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations following Ghana’s reported failure to meet the requirements to host the tournament, according to reports.
According to OwnGoalNigeria, CAF has informed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to prepare the team for a possible inclusion after Ghana was stripped of the hosting rights, with a new host expected to be announced.
Nigeria initially missed out on automatic qualification after losing 1-4 to Burkina Faso in the WAFU Zone B final. Ghana, as the original host nation, was expected to occupy the zone’s second slot.
However, with Ghana reportedly losing the hosting rights, Nigeria, as runners-up in the WAFU Zone B competition, could now benefit from the vacant position and secure a place in the tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for the FIFA U20 World Cup.
Note: CAF’s official confirmation of Ghana losing the hosting rights and Nigeria’s inclusion is still required.
