According to former Asante Kotoko, Brong Ahafo United, and Black Stars player Ntow Gyan, the criticism against Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton over his non-selection of home-based players should stop because there is currently no local player who deserves a call-up.
For the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification series Match-Day Three and Four, Hughton did not invite any Ghana Premier League player in his 25-man Ghana squad to face Angola on March 23rd and March 27th respectively.
Gyan, who is now a certified coach, believes that Hughton’s decision is justified because no local player can compete with foreign-based players for a position on the Black Stars.
Gyan told Kumasi-based Fox FM, “Tell me which local player deserves a call-up right now? You will find none. The quality of players in the local league now is so low, and they cannot compete against the foreign-based players. Therefore, the coach’s decision not to call any home-based players is warranted.” Gyan, who also played for Okwahu United and Real Tamale United, added this statement.
