Former Ghana Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using his popularity to gain political advantage during the 2024 General Elections.
In an Instagram Live session, the 39-year-old football legend expressed his disappointment over his involvement in the NPP’s campaign, revealing how the party leveraged his fame for electoral support.
Gyan, who initially joined Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s sports manifesto team in February 2024, was later criticized for his apparent backing of the ruling party, leaving many fans shocked by his political alignment.
However, Gyan distanced himself from the NPP after a viral video surfaced showing an altercation between him and an NPP official. He publicly announced his decision to step down from the party and refocus on his humanitarian efforts.
“They (NPP) used my popularity to get votes from the people,” Gyan said, reflecting on his brief involvement with the party.
Despite his association, the NPP suffered a significant defeat in the presidential election, losing to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by a wide margin in December 2024.
