Opponent Watch: Uruguay coach Diego Alonso names squad for Canada and Iran friendly

Uruguay national team head coach Diego Alonso has named a 41-man squad for two friendlies against Iran and Canada later this month.

The South Americans will face Iran on the 23rd of September before facing Canada four days later as they intensify their preparations for the world cup in Qatar.

Uruguay are without skipper Diego Godin who is expected to undergo surgery in Spain this week and could also miss the impending world cup.

The squad however have notable names such as Luis Suarez, Federico Valverde, Edinson Cavani, Martin Caceres and Darwin Nunez.

Uruguay are in the same group with Ghana, Portugal and South Korea for the 2022 world cup.

 

Goalkeepers: Sergio Rochet (National), Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray), Sebastián Sosa (Independent), Guillermo De Amores (Lanús), Santiago Mele (Unión de Santa Fe) and Gastón Olveira (Olimpia de Paraguay).

– Defenders: José María Giménez (Atlético de Madrid), Ronald Araújo (Barcelona), Sebastián Coates (Sporting de Lisboa), Martín Cáceres (Los Angeles Galaxy), Sebastián Cáceres (América), Leandro Cabrera (Espanyol), Damián Suárez (Getafe ), Guillermo Varela (Flamengo), Matías Viña (Rome), Mathías Olivera (Napoli), Joaquín Piquerez (Palmeiras), Bruno Méndez (Corinthians), Federico Pereira (Liverpool) and Agustín Rogel (Herta Berlin).

– Midfielders: Lucas Torreira (Galatasaray), Matías Vecino (Lazio), Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottenham), Federico Valverde (Real Madrid), Mauro Aramabarri (Getafe), Nicolás De la Cruz (River Plate), Manuel Ugarte (Sporting Lisbon) , Fernando Gorriarán (Santos Laguna), Giorgian De Arrascaeta (Flamengo), Facundo Torres (Orlando City), Facundo Pellistri (Manchester United), Agustín Canobbio (Athletico Paranaense) and Rodrigo Zalazar (Schalke 04).
