Otto Addo: “The Black Stars’ journey is long, but we will come back stronger”

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has shared his thoughts on the future of the Black Stars, acknowledging the challenges the team has faced in recent years while expressing optimism for their long-term growth.

Reflecting on the team’s current struggles, Addo highlighted the difficult journey that the Black Stars have been on for the past six or seven years. Despite this period of decline, he remains hopeful about the team’s potential, pointing to the World Cup qualification for Qatar 2022 as a small highlight amidst their struggles.

“I think it’s a long journey. It’s a long time. I think the recent six, seven years where the team was struggling, and now it’s really, really a small downfall. But also the small highlight came with me, with the World Cup 2022.”

Addo, however, acknowledged the possibility of a more significant setback, particularly if the team fails to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Ghana’s chances of securing a spot are now hanging by a thread after their disappointing results in the October international break.

“Now I’m responsible maybe for a big, big downfall, for not qualifying. But like I said, mathematically we still have a chance, we will do everything. But I’m convinced, very, very convinced that in this team, and like I said, I think if you know anything about football, and you saw our home games only, you know that there’s so much more on this team.”

Despite the recent struggles, Addo remains confident in the talent and potential of his squad. He believes the team has more to offer and is committed to helping them bounce back.

“And it’s a long journey, like I said, it’s a process. And the team will work and reflect on their failures. And sometimes this situation can make teams even better. We know we have a big responsibility.”

Addo also touched on the broader significance of football in Ghana, acknowledging the immense responsibility that the Black Stars carry in uniting the nation and providing hope for the youth.

“And we know what football can do to the nation. Football is a great equalizer. And we will work hard for the youth, for the nation, for everyone, to bring Ghana back to where Ghana belongs. We will try to prepare them mentally strong enough to fulfill this aim.”

In closing, Addo stressed the importance of mental preparation for his players as they continue their journey toward improvement.

“We’ll come back stronger,” he promised, as he looks ahead to the next phase in the Black Stars’ evolution.
