Former Portugal and South Korea head coach Paulo Bento has emerged as a leading candidate for the vacant Black Stars coaching position, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) stepping up efforts to appoint a new manager.
The role became available following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a series of underwhelming results in recent international fixtures, leaving the team without a substantive head coach.
With roughly 70 days to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, pressure is mounting on the GFA to secure a capable replacement to guide preparations. Reports indicate that Bento is interested in the position and eager to return to international management.
The 54-year-old brings significant World Cup experience, having guided South Korea to the Round of 16 at the 2022 tournament, earning praise for his tactical discipline and structured approach.
Bento is no stranger to the Ghana job, having been previously linked to the role in 2022. Despite over 600 reported applications for the position, he remains one of the standout candidates under serious consideration.
Another high-profile name in the mix is Hervé Renard, although uncertainties surrounding his current situation have reportedly shifted greater focus onto Bento within Ghanaian football circles.
Since leaving South Korea, Bento has had an eventful spell—holding talks with Poland before Fernando Santos was appointed, and later managing the United Arab Emirates national team until his dismissal in March 2025.
Despite that setback, the Ghana opportunity presents a chance for a swift return to the global stage, with a talented squad and a World Cup campaign on the horizon.
The final decision now rests on whether Bento will accept what is expected to be a short-term but high-pressure role, as the GFA continues its evaluation process before naming the next Black Stars head coach.
