Premier League’s best midfielders – ranked

The Premier League is home to a string of great midfielders and the best thing is, there’s a player to suit everyone’s needs.

Destructive number fours, playmaking number sixes, dynamic number eights and silky number tens. You name it, the Premier League’s got it.

But who is the cream of the crop? Here is 90min’s top 10 PL midfielders on current form…

10. Paul Pogba (New Entry)

Back from injury and looking close to being back to his best already.
The French World Cup winner is undoubtedly one of the most talented footballers in the Premier League.

9. James Ward-Prowse (New Entry)

James Ward-Prowse has taken his game to a new level in 2022, producing some eye-catching performances as well as continuing to bang free kicks into top corners around England at will.
Surely he’s earned an international call-up, right?

8. Mason Mount (Up 1)

It is rare that attacking midfielders are as consistent as Mason Mount.
Spotless out of possession, he also uses the ball efficiently, as his seven goals and eight assists this season can attest to.
Chelsea have spent a lot of money on their squad in recent times but few players are as important as this homegrown talent.

7. Phil Foden (Up 1)

Phil Foden can do things that very few players in the Premier League can replicate.
An irresistible blend of pace, technique and movement make him nigh-on impossible to defend against. It is scary to think what he will go on to achieve before he calls time on his career.

6. N’Golo Kante (Down 1)

N’Golo Kante’s powers were being doubted a while ago but he has made these critics look very stupid over the past 12 months.
Underrated on the ball, his defensive powers are legendary and over the past few seasons he has even started to add some goals to his game. He’s also a thoroughly nice bloke by all accounts.

5. Bruno Fernandes (Up 2)

Bruno Fernandes being as low as seven on this list would have been unthinkable during the early part of his Man Utd career.
However, although he has been picking up his game in January, he has failed to replicate the heights of his early Red Devils days this season.
On his day, he remains unplayable.

4. Rodri (Down 1)

Rodri has had his doubters over the years, but this season accepting his brilliance has become mainstream.
Replacing the timeless Fernandinho was never going to be an easy task but the Spaniard has continually risen to the challenge and is now one of the few ‘undroppables’ in Pep Guardiola’s side.

3. Declan Rice (Up 1)

One day, probably in the future, West Ham are going to sell Declan Rice for a lot of money.
Sure, his price tag will be inflated by the ‘English player’ tax, but he will also attract monster bids because he is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.

2. Bernardo Silva (-)

It is impossible not to marvel at Bernardo Silva whenever he takes to the pitch.
His close control, agility, and turn of pace mean he can carry the ball for pretty much as long as he wants. Once he gets to the end of his meandering runs he normally provides a key pass, assist or goal too.

1. Kevin De Bruyne (-)

Here he is. The best midfielder in the Premier League.
Kevin De Bruyne seems to finally be on his way back to his best following a few injury frustrations – and we’re loving it.
