Ghanaian President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Unveils Strategy to Resurrect Ghanaian Football After Disappointing AFCON Performance
In response to recent setbacks in Ghanaian football, notably the underwhelming performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), President Akufo-Addo has announced a proactive policy aimed at rejuvenating the sport.
Acknowledging the need for a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to address the challenges, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of reviving talent development from the grassroots level.
Delivering his State of the Nation address, Akufo-Addo outlined the key components of the proposed policy, which includes scouting, grooming, and nurturing talent at the district grassroots level.
He underscored the collaboration between the Ministry of Education’s school sports department and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in conjunction with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), to establish juvenile teams at district, regional, and national levels for both genders.
“The school sports department of the Ministry of Education will work hand in hand with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration and synergy with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), to build district, regional and national juvenile teams for both boys and girls.”
The announcement comes in the wake of the dissolution of the Black Stars’ technical team led by Chris Hughton following their disappointing AFCON 2023 campaign, where they failed to secure a single victory and exited the group stage for the second consecutive tournament.
Currently, the Ghana Football Association is actively seeking a new coach to steer the national team toward a path of renewal and success.
