Ghana’s sports sector will now be overseen by the newly established Ministry of Sports and Recreation following a government-driven institutional restructure.
The change, enacted under Section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C. Law 327), separates the sports and youth sectors, bringing an end to their previous consolidation.
President John Dramani Mahama’s decision also gives rise to the creation of a distinct Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, which will focus solely on youth affairs.
This restructuring reduces the total number of ministries from thirty to twenty-three, a reduction of seven ministries compared to the previous administration.
President Mahama is expected to announce the new Sports Minister next week, with former Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuije and Wisdom Kobla Woyome, chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports during the eighth parliament, among the leading candidates for the position.
