Award-winning Gambian referee Bakary Papa Gassama has officially declared his retirement from refereeing, culminating nearly two decades of service.
Known for his exceptional contributions, Gassama not only officiated multiple African Cup of Nations but also presided over two separate World Cup finals.
Born on February 10, 1979, in Memmeh village, Jokadou District, North Bank Region, the 44-year-old referee gained prominence in FIFA’s elite panel since joining in 2007.
Beginning his journey in The Gambia’s local Nawettan competition and domestic leagues, Gassama’s prowess with the whistle soon garnered attention on regional and global platforms, notably in CAF inter-club competitions.
Renowned for fairness, deep game understanding, and composure under high-pressure situations, Gassama earned respect and admiration throughout his career. His fan base extends across the continent, reflecting the satisfaction with his work.
Gassama officiated significant matches, including the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Notably, he took center stage in the Netherlands vs. Chile match, earning global acclaim for his performance.
His international career includes appearances in various competitions such as the Africa Cup of Nations, U-20 World Cup, CAF Champions League, Club World Cup Championship, FIFA Confederations Cup Final, and others.
As Gassama steps away from international duties, his decision to retire aims to create opportunities for the emergence of young referees on the global stage.
Despite retiring from international refereeing, Gassama commits to contributing to the GFF domestic league Division One for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.
