Ronald Donkor has described his first-ever call-up to the Black Stars as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, expressing his excitement and gratitude after being named in Ghana’s national team squad.
The young midfielder says he found it difficult to fully believe the news when he first learned that he was being considered for the senior national team.
According to Donkor, he preferred to wait for the official squad announcement before allowing himself to celebrate the opportunity, as he wanted confirmation that his name was genuinely part of the team.
“This has been my dream to play for the national team. I didn’t believe what was going to happen next, so I was like, let me wait and see what was going to happen next.
“I wanted them to release the list so that I could confirm that I am part of the team. Every single Ghanaian wants to play for the national team, and wearing this jersey is really good for me, and I am really happy and grateful.”
Donkor’s comments highlight the significance attached to representing the Black Stars, particularly for a player who has worked his way towards earning recognition at the highest level of Ghanaian football.
For many Ghanaian footballers, receiving a senior national team invitation represents one of the biggest achievements of their careers. The Black Stars jersey carries a strong sense of national pride, and Donkor says he understands the responsibility that comes with being selected.
His reaction also shows how much the call-up means to him personally. Rather than assuming that his inclusion was guaranteed, Donkor waited for the official list before allowing himself to believe that he had earned a place among the country’s senior internationals.
The midfielder’s first Black Stars call-up therefore marks an important stage in his development and gives him an opportunity to work alongside some of Ghana’s established international players.
Donkor will now look to make the most of the opportunity as he begins his journey with the senior national team.
The call-up could also serve as a major boost to his confidence, while giving him the platform to demonstrate his abilities on the international stage.
For Donkor, however, the immediate focus appears to be on appreciating the opportunity and understanding the importance of wearing the national colours.
His statement that “Every single Ghanaian wants to play for the national team” reflects the deep emotional connection many players have with the Black Stars and the pride associated with representing Ghana.
The midfielder’s excitement is understandable, particularly because a first senior national team invitation can become a defining moment in a player’s career.
Donkor will now have the chance to turn his long-held ambition into reality and begin what he hopes will be a successful international career with the Black Stars.
With his first call-up secured, attention will now turn to how he adapts to the national team environment and whether he can establish himself as an important player for Ghana in the years ahead.
