Cristiano Ronaldo is now Manchester United’s joint fifth all-time Premier League goalscorer.
Ronaldo scored the opening goal as United beat Brighton 2-0 on Tuesday night and that was his 97th league goal for the club.
That brings Ronaldo level on Premier League goals for United with Andy Cole, who also has 97 league goals for the Reds.
Ronaldo, 37, was enduring his longest goal drought for over a decade until he found the back of the net against Brighton. The forward didn’t celebrate in his usual manner and looked relieved as opposed to elated as his strike gave his side the lead on Tuesday.
The strike was Ronaldo’s ninth league goal of the season and he’s scored 15 goals in total across all competitions this term.
Ronaldo is now in touching distance of breaking Ruud van Nistelrooy’s league haul (95) for United, but it seems the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will have to stay in Manchester for another season if he wants to surpass Paul Scholes (107) and Ryan Giggs (109).
It’s highly likely Wayne Rooney‘s record of 183 league goals for United will never be broken.
Ronaldo is contracted at United until 2023.
