Newly-promoted English Premier League side, Sheffield United’s goalkeeper, Jordan Yamoah Amissah, has received a call-up to join the Black Meteors for the upcoming CAF U-23 AFCON tournament later this month, Sportsworldghana.com can confirm.
Having previously played for Borussia Dortmund’s youth team, Amissah has already joined his teammates in camp. They are currently preparing to move to Egypt for pre-tournament training before heading to Morocco for the event.
Amissah showcased exceptional skills while on loan at League One side Burton Albion, impressing the likes of Ibrahim Tanko, who decided to include him in the squad for the forthcoming tournament.
During the event, scheduled to take place from June 25 to July 8, Ghana will compete against hosts Morocco, Congo Brazzaville, and Guinea, with the ultimate goal of securing a spot in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.
Ghana has not participated in the Olympics since their last appearance in 2004 during the Athens Games in Greece. They are eager to break this 20-year absence and make a strong comeback.
In the previous edition of the tournament held in Japan in 2020, the Black Meteors came close to qualifying but were defeated by South Africa in the third-place playoffs, losing in a penalty shootout.
