Sky Sports co-commentator Don Goodman was left stunned by Ghanaian striker Brandon Thomas-Asante after he played a “massive” part in the West Brom winner against Norwich City on Saturday [29 April].
West Brom kept their faint playoff hopes alive with a crucial 2-1 win over Norwich at the Hawthorns meaning they need a win against Swansea on the last day and other results to go in their favour if they’re to take part.
Goals from Conor Townsend and Jed Wallace handed Carlos Corberan and his men the precious three points but Goodman was wowed by Thomas-Asante’s energy and endeavour in the lead-up to the Baggies winner.
The forward won the ball deep inside just past the halfway line before driving forward and played a timely pass to the onrushing Townsend who delivered across the six-yard box for Wallace to sweep home.
And Goodman, speaking on Sky Sports co-commentary [29 April] said: “It’s never over till it’s over but Thomas-Asante plays a massive part in this.
“I spoke about his decision-making earlier on in the game, taking shots from places that he shouldn’t but this time he gets his decisions all right because Townsend the skipper makes him a brilliant offer there and then they’ve got bodies, three in the box.”
Great performance
It was a great performance from Thomas-Asante against Norwich City.
He may not have got his goal but his work ethic, energy, aggression and off-the-ball endeavour are absolutely infectious and it’s what led to the West Brom winner that very much keeps their playoff hopes alive.
Corberan will have been mightily worried after Daryl Dike’s long-term injury blow, but Thomas-Asante has completely quashed those fears with his recent performances, showing just how crucial he could be in the club’s attempts to secure a playoff place on the final day of the season.
West Brom were brilliant against Norwich, coming from a goal down to win the game and Thomas-Asante was indeed a massive part of their exploits.
Now remains one more game of the season in which Corberan’s men will need to raise their performance levels again, against a difficult Swansea side in Wales and also hope that the chips fall in their favour in regard to their rivals around them. They’ve certainly given themselves a fighting chance when all their hopes looked bleak a few weeks ago.
Thomas-Asante, who’s become an unlikely solution, will be key to those faint ambitions. He has made 32 league appearances for West Brom this season, scoring 7 goals.
