“Some people support Sundowns because of their bet slips, they see it as a source of income,” says Rulani Mokwena.

Mamelodi sundowns indeed make punters win a lot because they mostly win their games. The Masandawana are one of the teams on the continent that dominate their domestic games. They can go the whole season and will not lose even 5 games domestically.

Rulani Mokwena has been under pressure from the Sundowns’ fans due to their elimination by Esperance Sportive de Tunis in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League. The Tunisians beat the Brazillians 2-0 on aggregate. They won 1-0 in Tunisia and shockingly won 1-0 in Pretoria on Friday in the second leg.

Fans of Sundowns believe that they should be in the finals and eventually win the trophy because they have assembled one of the most expensive squads on the continent and have the potential to lift their second CAF Champions League.

Head coach Rulani Mokwena has hit back at Sundowns’ fans calling for his sack. He sarcastically revealed that most fans support Mamelodi Sundowns because of their bet slips.

Fans love teams that win always because of the role betting plays now in society. They get very angry when their bets are spoiled.

Mamelodi Sundowns are the defending champions of the African Football League but must wait for another year to win the CAF Champions League as Al Ahly and Esperance are set to fight for the coveted trophy.
