The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has confirmed that Parliament will extend its support to Asante Kotoko for their upcoming match against DC United in the United States on October 12, 2024.
Bagbin has tasked his team with seeking corporate sponsorship to assist the club in this international fixture. This match is part of Asante Kotoko’s reward for winning the inaugural Democracy Cup.
Speaking during a review meeting with Primeval Media, the organisers of the match, Bagbin emphasized Parliament’s responsibility as the initiator of the Democracy Cup to ensure Kotoko fulfills their commitment to play in the USA.
He also highlighted the role of football in promoting and developing nations, noting the historical significance of the match venue for both countries.
Asante Kotoko legend Samuel Opoku Nti, who represented the club at the meeting, expressed gratitude to Speaker Bagbin. He highlighted the significance of the match as an opportunity for the club and its players to showcase their talents on an international stage.
“This is a valuable opportunity, and we are committed to giving our best. This will be our first match in the USA, and the team is excited about the experience,” Nti said.
Nti also urged the Speaker to implement measures for the sustainability of the Democracy Cup, which is set to become an annual event.
The first edition of the cup saw Asante Kotoko defeat Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s parliamentary democracy celebrations.
