One of the youngest players in the Asokwa Deportivo SC team, Steven Asante has been lightening up the Division One League this season with master-class performance for the Kumasi-based club.
Asante, 16, have been in the Deportivo setup since last campaign after showing glimpses of brilliance during his time with the club’s under-17 team which led to his promotion into the senior squad.
The young but gifted defender upon his promotion to the senior team glittered in the 2019-20 campaign before the season was truncated due to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.
In twelve League matches played in the second tier of Ghana Football, the attacking minded right-back provided six assists in those games for the Allah is Great side.
After his breakthrough season at the club, the youngster attracted interest from Premier League clubs like, Aduana Stars FC, Legon Cities FC and Berekum Chelsea FC respectively.
One might ask why the player is still with the Asokwa team after the lofty deals offered him by the country’s elite division clubs.
But hey, the Ghanaian young lad has also been courting interest from foreign clubs and agents alike leading to a decision by the his current employers to keep him at the club to fully develop his game to be able to meet the requirements at the international level and be ready made for the European markets.
The 16-year-old, this season have started the season on a blistering level just as he ended last season with great passing abilities and his contribution to the team’s attack with his surging runs.
Despite being an attacking minded defensive player, Asante is able to track back on time to do his defensive duties to help his team and colleagues to keep their shape whenever they are under siege from the opposing attackers.
With his crossing abilities and his eyes to give an incisive passes, the ‘Asokwa Boy’ is undoubtedly destined for greatness if he should keep his head up and continue working hard and would definitely become a great asset to the country in the future to come.
This campaign, with just two games played in the league, the young lad has been wowing football fans with his exciting runs and his timely interventions which has contributed to his team picking four points from two games with win over Swedru All Blacks and a draw on the road against Cape Coast Venomous Vipers.
It won’t be long before the enterprising Asante short himself to fame in Ghana and beyond if he manages to keep his form and improve his game in all aspect in the subsequent games.
The young right-back has already played a role in two of his side’s three goals scored in their opening two matches.
Wearing the number 17 at his back, Asante brings the memories of the great, Peter Ofori Quaye and Owusu Afriyie’s abilities of providing quality crosses into the box with his darting runs for his attackers to attack despite being a defensive player.
Steven Asante a name that should be ringing a bell in the ears of many Ghanaian football fans sooner than later.
