In an unexpected move to fortify the Black Stars’ midfield, head coach Chris Hughton introduces a surprise inclusion to Ghana’s provisional squad for the highly anticipated 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Michael Baidoo.
At 24 years old, Baidoo has made a name for himself both domestically and internationally, impressing with standout performances on the pitch. Beginning his career with Ghanaian club Vision FC, the midfielder’s trajectory took an international turn when he joined Danish club Midtjylland in 2018.
However, it was his move to IF Elfsborg in January 2022 that marked a pivotal moment, signing a lucrative four-year contract with the Swedish powerhouse.
The IF Elfsborg maestro showcased his football prowess in the 2022/23 Allsvenskan season, netting an impressive eight goals in 21 appearances and contributing two crucial assists.
Coach Hughton, recognizing Baidoo’s stellar performances in the midfield, has granted him a spot in the Black Stars’ provisional squad for AFCON.
Baidoo’s current season statistics are impressive, with 28 appearances, five goals, and six assists in the competitive Swedish Allsvenskan league.
Ghana, placed in Group B alongside record champions Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde, will kick off its 2023 AFCON campaign against Cape Verde on January 14, 2024.
