Swiss-Ghanaian defender Gregory Wüthrich was on the scoresheet as Sturm Graz claimed a thrilling 4-2 victory over Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga Championship Group clash at the Merkur Arena on Friday evening.
Wüthrich, who completed the full 90 minutes, delivered a commanding performance at the back and added a goal to his name in the 48th minute. The centre-back reacted swiftly to a corner, firing home from close range to restore Sturm’s two-goal cushion at 3-1.
Sturm Graz got off to a flying start, taking the lead in the 18th minute courtesy of an own goal from Salzburg’s Terzic. Just two minutes later, William Bøving doubled the advantage. Salzburg managed to pull one back before halftime through Dorgeles Nene.
Wüthrich’s second-half strike gave the hosts breathing room, and although an own goal by David Aiwu briefly reignited Salzburg’s hopes, a late finish from Chukwuani sealed a deserved win for Sturm Graz.
The victory was a significant one in terms of historical context, with Sturm now claiming their 15th win over Salzburg, who still lead the head-to-head with 34 victories.
Sturm Graz will next face Rapid Wien on May 18 as they continue their pursuit of the league title.
