Asante Kotoko head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, expressed his disappointment following his team’s draw with Karela United in a betPawa Premier League matchday 3 fixture.
Baba Yahaya came off the bench to score a late equalizer as Asante Kotoko salvaged a 1-1 draw with Karela United at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday night.
The Porcupine Warriors have yet to secure a win in three league games, having previously drawn with Heart of Lions and lost to Bibiani Goldstars.
Karela United took an early lead through Evans Adomako in the 9th minute, stunning the home team. Adomako outpaced Asante Kotoko defender Henry Ansu before netting the opener.
Despite pressing for an equalizer, the first half concluded without Kotoko finding the net. The pressure eventually paid off in the closing stages when Baba Yahaya rescued a point, extending their winless streak to six matches.
Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum commented on the match, saying, “If you look at the chances we missed and the way we played right from the blast of the whistle to the end, especially in the second half, the chances we created, we missed, that wasn’t the result I was expecting,” Ogum said in a post-match interview with StarTimes.
He emphasized the need to continue practicing goal-scoring drills and boost the players’ confidence in front of goal, urging them to remain composed and precise when taking shots.
“All that we need to do is to keep practicing more goal scoring drills, giving them the confidence to be composed in front of goal, they need to pick their spot, apply the right technique and then that should be it so I will need to encourage them. It is better you create the chances and you miss than you don’t create at all.
Ogum also noted the positive aspect of creating numerous scoring opportunities and highlighted that creating chances increases the likelihood of scoring. He cited an improvement in the team’s ability to create chances compared to previous games.
“If you create, it means the possibility of scoring is high because if you look at our first game up to now, we are creating more, we created less in the Heart of Lions game, we created more than that at Bibiani and today I think we created about two, three times than the number of chances we created at Bibiani so it’s a good signal for the team”
The draw leaves Asante Kotoko in 17th place with 2 points after two draws and one defeat in the opening three games of the season. Karela United will travel to Accra to face Great Olympics on Matchday 4, while Asante Kotoko will take on Accra Lions on Friday.
