“That’s really bad news for us” – Arsenal manager Arteta confirms Thomas Partey’s muscle injury

Arsenal pair Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey are expected to be out for at least a few weeks, according the the club’s manager Mikel Arteta.

Jesus injured his hamstring during Tuesday’s win in Sevilla, while Partey damaged his thigh in training on Monday.

Mikel Arteta expects both players to be absent for a few weeks, which would likely mean they are out of action until the international break next month.

Partey, however, is due to undergo further tests and it means he could face longer than that on the sidelines.

“He (Partey) has got a muscle injury and we expect him to be out for a few weeks,” said Arteta. “We don’t really know the extent of it still and he has more tests today.

“But he picked up that injury in training, in the last training session with the last kick of the ball before Sevilla. It’s very unfortunate.

“I don’t think [it was because he went away with Ghana]. He was coming from a period of absence and he needed minutes and he played with the national team. We try to always be in touch with them.

“And then we have two games with Chelsea and Sevilla, very, very close, and we decided not to load him in the first game to play him in Seville – and then that happened in training.

“Sometimes it is difficult, you try to prevent it. If he had got injured against Chelsea or against City, we would have said we had rushed him. But then you rest him and he gets injured. It is things that happen in football.”

Jesus’ absence is a big blow to Arsenal given he has already missed much of this season after injuring his knee in August.

The striker looked back to his best on Tuesday, scoring one and setting up another, but now he is set for a spell out.

“The scans show that there is a muscle injury and we might lose him for a few weeks again,” said Arteta.

“With Gabi I cannot give you any timeframes because he always surprises us, but there is something there. He felt it in a really awkward and it’s true that he had quite a lot of load in the last few weeks with the national team, and then playing those games, which he hasn’t done in a long, long time.

“That’s really bad news for us.”
