Aduana FC General Manager Takyi Arhin believes Ghana should increase the number of home-based players in the Black Stars, arguing that many foreign-based players have not shown enough commitment during Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Arhin claimed the current crop of overseas-based players, popularly referred to as “borgas”, have struggled to replicate the performances they produce during FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
“The ‘borgas’ in the Black Stars are not prepared to take us to the AFCON, so it’s time to focus on having more local players in the national team.”
The experienced football administrator pointed to the contrast between Ghana’s performances in the World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON qualifiers as evidence that changes are needed in the team’s composition.
“Just look at how they [foreign players] play in the World Cup qualifiers compared to the AFCON qualifiers.”
Arhin’s comments come after the Black Stars suffered back-to-back defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, leaving Ghana without a point from their opening two Group C matches.
The Aduana FC official believes giving more opportunities to standout performers in the Ghana Premier League could strengthen competition within the national team and help improve results as Ghana look to revive their AFCON qualifying campaign.
