Ghana legend Stephen Appiah has urged the inclusion of standout players from the Ghana Premier League and other local competitions in the Black Stars squad.
Speaking before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, Appiah expressed confusion over why the league’s top scorer and best player have not received national team call-ups.
He emphasized that it is every local player’s dream to represent their country, and being overlooked despite strong performances can lead to significant psychological distress.
“The Ghana Premier League top scorer should be in the Black Stars. The players perform, and when they are neglected, it even leads to depression because the ultimate aim of every local player is to perform and get a chance in the Black Stars,” Appiah stated.
He highlighted the need for equal opportunities, stressing that players should not be disadvantaged simply because they play in Ghana. “If we continue this process, no good player will be willing to stay and play in the Ghana Premier League,” he warned.
Appiah, who famously led the Black Stars to their first FIFA World Cup appearance in Germany in 2006, is passionate about ensuring local talent is recognized and valued in the national team setup.
