Black Stars Technical Advisor Winfried Schaefer has reiterated the importance of the Ghana Premier League in developing national team talent, describing it as the heart of football in Ghana.
Speaking to Medeama FM, the experienced German tactician highlighted his close monitoring of domestic football, visiting league venues, engaging with coaches, and assessing players to strengthen the Black Stars ahead of upcoming competitions.
“Over the past two months, I have been visiting league venues and speaking with coaches and players. The best player I have seen is Benjamin Asare, and he is the Black Stars’ first choice goalkeeper,” Schaefer said, throwing his full support behind the Ghana Premier League standout.
Schaefer stressed that the foundation of Ghanaian football lies at home, urging players to recognize the opportunities available in the local league rather than focusing solely on European clubs for development.
“The heart of football in Ghana is in the local league, not only with players in Europe,” he added.
He also challenged home-based players to raise their performance levels if they hope to earn a call-up to the national team.
“I urge all players to work hard if they want to earn a call-up into the Black Stars,” Schaefer said.
His comments signal a renewed focus on domestic talent, showing that players excelling in the Ghana Premier League will continue to play a key role in shaping the future of the Black Stars.
