Dutch forward Memphis Depay has shared the reasons behind his decision to join Brazilian club Corinthians, emphasizing the cultural similarities between Brazil and his Ghanaian roots as a key factor.
Depay, 30, signed a two-year contract with Corinthians in September after leaving Atletico Madrid, a transfer that surprised many given his high profile.
In an interview with Flashscore, Depay, whose heritage is Ghanaian, revealed that Brazil’s vibrant atmosphere played a significant role in his decision. “The people in Brazil are like Ghana, very enthusiastic, energized people. The country is beautiful, and they have great food. The training facility is also amazing,” he said.
He also highlighted Brazil’s rich football legacy as a major draw. “Brazil is like the Mecca of football. All the talents are coming from there, so I wanted to see that, and they convinced me,” Depay added.
At the time of his arrival, Corinthians were struggling in 17th place and facing relegation. The challenge appealed to Depay, who thrives under pressure. “I felt like I needed to do something different. I like a challenge,” he stated.
Since his arrival, Depay has played a key role in the team’s resurgence, scoring seven goals and providing one assist in 11 matches. His contributions have helped Corinthians climb to seventh place in the league and secure a spot in the Copa Libertadores qualifying rounds.
