”They are jokers” – Hearts Oak legend Amankwah Mireku blasts current players for poor performance

Former Hearts of Oak captain, Yaw Amankwah Mireku, didn’t hold back in his criticism of the current squad’s performance, slamming them as “jokers” amidst the team’s concerning dip in form.

The once dominant champions find themselves in a perilous position, flirting with relegation after suffering five defeats in their last six games, including a disappointing 1-0 loss to local rivals Accra Lions.

Mireku, who led Hearts of Oak to victory in the 2004 CAF Confederation Cup, pointed fingers at the players, accusing them of engaging in distractions like womanizing and lacking the necessary passion to represent the club. He singled out midfielder Salifu Ibrahim for particular criticism due to his lackluster displays this season.

“Players lose focus when they join Hearts of Oak because they prioritize money and an unnecessary lifestyle. Look at Salifu Ibrahim, was this his performance when he first joined? He’s lost his passion and zeal,” Mireku stated in an interview with Akoma FM.

“They forget why they came here and just enjoy themselves. They’re making money at Hearts of Oak,” he added.

Mireku cautioned against the negative impact of their lifestyle choices, warning of potential consequences for the former African champions.

“Instead of acknowledging the challenge of playing for Hearts of Oak and giving their all, they’re just taking it lightly. They buy small cars, entertain girls, and that’s it. They’re just joking around,” he continued.

With only six games left in the season, Hearts of Oak faces a tough battle for survival, with crucial matches against Berekum Chelsea and Aduana Stars looming.

Mireku stressed the urgent need for players to prioritize their commitment to the club over frivolous distractions, urging them to elevate their performance and set aside extravagant lifestyles for the team’s sake.

“They must put in more effort and forget about their luxurious lifestyles.”
