Former Asante Kotoko goalkeeper, George Owu, is optimistic about Ghana’s chances of winning the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast next year.
Ghana secured their tenth successive appearance at the AFCON by defeating Central African Republic 2-1 in the final game of the qualifiers at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium last Thursday. This victory allowed Ghana to finish at the top of the group with twelve points, with Angola securing the second spot.
While Ghana may not be considered the sole favorite to win the competition, George Owu believes that the Black Stars possess a squad of talented players capable of clinching the tournament in the French-speaking nation.
“This Ghana team can win the AFCON with the right support and motivation from Ghanaians”, Owu said on Onua FM in Accra.
Ghana will learn about their group-stage opponents for the AFCON when the draw is conducted on October 12, 2023. The tournament will feature twenty-four countries, including Gambia, Namibia, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, and Mozambique, all of whom have secured their places in the competition.
