“This is a huge relief” – Randy Abbey welcomes CAF approval for Ghana’s home game against Sudan at Accra Sports Stadium

Dr. Randy Abbey, an Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association, has expressed relief that the Black Stars of Ghana will host its upcoming home match against Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 11, 2024.

This decision comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) revoked the license for Baba Yara Sports Stadium, following troubling incidents during Ghana’s defeat to Angola in Kumasi. Dr. Abbey highlighted the importance of playing on home soil, emphasizing that it alleviates the potential embarrassment of having to play away.

While expressing happiness about the conditional approval from CAF, he noted that there is still work to be done to ensure the stadium meets necessary standards. Speaking on Metro TV’s Sports Show, Dr. Abbey elaborated, “CAF has written to us and given us what you would want to call a conditional approval to play the game on the 11th of October at the Accra Sports Stadium. However, they indicated there are some improvements we need to make before that match.”

He further clarified that the approval is specific to this game and that CAF will need to be satisfied with the stadium’s condition for any future matches.

“This is a huge relief. You always prefer to play at home rather than traveling elsewhere for a match that isn’t classified as an away game. Our focus now is to prepare the team to secure three points on the 11th and ensure that those responsible for maintaining the stadium adhere to the required standards,” Dr. Abbey stated.
