Ghana’s Black Satellites pulled off a major upset with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over defending champions Senegal in their second Group C match of the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations at the Suez Stadium on Monday evening.
Head coach Desmond Ofei made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with DR Congo in the tournament opener, replacing Abdul Hakim Sulemana and Andrews Adjabeng in the starting lineup.
The Ghanaians delivered a spirited performance, with midfielder Emmanuel Mensah emerging as the hero of the night. He netted the only goal of the game in the 15th minute, finishing off a superb through ball from Jerry Afriyie with composure to beat the Senegalese goalkeeper.
The early lead allowed Ghana to settle into a disciplined and organized first-half display, frustrating Senegal’s efforts to break them down.
After the break, Senegal responded with intensity, dominating possession and launching a series of attacks. However, Ghana’s defense held firm, anchored by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Gidios Aseako. The shot-stopper produced seven vital saves and was deservedly named man of the match for preserving the clean sheet.
The win puts Ghana level on four points with DR Congo at the top of Group C.
The Black Satellites will take on the Central African Republic in their final group game, while Senegal, now under pressure, must beat DR Congo to keep their title defense alive.
