Ghana’s Black Starlets suffered a disappointing 1–0 defeat to 10-man Senegal in their second group match at the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, leaving their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
Despite enjoying numerical advantage for a significant portion of the game, the Black Starlets were unable to break down a disciplined Senegalese side that showed resilience and organisation throughout the encounter.
The decisive moment came as Senegal took advantage of a rare opening to score the only goal of the match, a strike that ultimately separated the two sides in a tightly contested affair.
Ghana’s frustrations were compounded late in the first half when they missed a crucial penalty that could have changed the complexion of the match and given them control heading into the break.
Senegal, even after going down to ten men, defended resolutely and managed to hold onto their slender lead until the final whistle, securing a vital victory.
The result leaves Ghana bottom of the group and facing a must-win situation in their final group match against South Africa if they are to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage alive.
With pressure mounting, the Black Starlets will now need a strong response to revive their U17 AFCON campaign.
