The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, faced jeers from fans in Kumasi during the Kufuor Cup match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman.
Despite Kotoko’s triumph on Sunday night, the anticipated trophy presentation by Okraku was marred by loud booing from disgruntled fans, overshadowing the celebratory atmosphere.
The discontentment persisted as Okraku departed, further amplifying the pressure on football authorities, including the GFA.
This incident comes in the wake of the recent #SaveGhanaFootball demonstration held in Accra on February 14, 2024. Protesters voiced grievances regarding poor performances by national teams, notably the Black Stars’ underwhelming display at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The demonstration, originating at Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and concluding at the Black Stars Square, culminated in the submission of a petition to the Speaker of Parliament. Participants advocated for structural reforms to enhance football in the nation, intensifying scrutiny on football authorities.
While Asante Kotoko celebrated their Kufuor Cup victory, the unexpected backlash against GFA President Kurt Okraku underscored mounting discontent among fans and heightened pressure on authorities to address issues raised during the #SaveGhanaFootball demonstration.
