Former Black Stars defender John Paintsil has called on Ghana Premier League clubs to take proactive steps to raise the standard of the domestic league.
During an appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz, Paintsil commended the Ghana Football Association for its support to clubs but emphasized the need for clubs to do more to improve themselves.
While acknowledging the assistance provided by the football association, Paintsil urged clubs to utilize their resources wisely and seek additional financing to enhance their operations.
“Every year, before the league starts, the GFA provides footballs and money for the clubs but in my time, this wasn’t the case so the clubs must help themselves,” he said.
Paintsil stressed the significance of ensuring that local-based players are content, as this contributes to player retention within the Ghanaian league.
“The little you get, use it judiciously. Wherever you can get money to finance the team, you should do it. If the local (based) players are happy, you will see that the players will stay here (in Ghana).”
The former Fulham and West Ham United player, who represented Ghana at the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, brings a wealth of experience to his observations on the state of Ghanaian football.
