On Monday, August 14, Hearts of Oak revealed the acquisition of talented defender Michael Ampadu, formerly of Legon Cities, strengthening their roster in the Ghana Premier League.
Ampadu’s arrival comes as a free transfer after his departure from Legon Cities FC at the conclusion of the previous Ghana top-tier football season. Turning down offers from various clubs, including Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Goldstars, Ampadu’s versatility greatly enhances the Accra-based club, addressing the departures of Robert Addo Sowah and Konadu Yiadom in the current transfer window.
Hearts of Oak officially introduced Ampadu with the statement, “Fellow Phobians, let’s welcome the latest addition to the family, Michael Ampadu.”
Joining recent signings Raphael Amponsah, Evans Adomako, Martin Karikari from Asekem FC, along with Leventus Arthur and Kelvin Osei Asibey from Techiman Eleven Wonders, Ampadu becomes the latest member of the club’s squad. He is set to join his teammates for the ongoing pre-season training at Pobiman in Accra.
Ampadu’s professional journey includes four seasons with Liberty Professionals from 2016 to 2020 before his move to Legon Cities in 2020 for the 2020–21 Ghana Premier League season. His standout performances in the league have established him as one of the premier right-backs, earning him a spot in the Ghana U23 national team in 2019. He also formed part of coach Ibrahim Tanko’s squad for the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifiers.
In the meantime, as Hearts of Oak remains without a coach, they are in the final stages of appointing Dutch trainer Martin Koopman as the new head coach ahead of the upcoming season set to commence in September.
