Goals from Benjamin Arthur and Daniel Obeng secured a first victory this season for Elmina Sharks as they defeated WAFA 2-0 at the Babayara sports stadium in one of the fixtures moved from its original venue by broadcasters Startimes.
Elmina Sharks were the more compact side of the two defending stoutly and breaking on the counter but rather surprisingly they scored both goals from set piece incidents as WAFA defended badly. The first goal saw Arthur connect home the opener in the 37th minute following a freekick centered from the right by former Kotoko winger Richard Mpong.
WAFA’s attack of Aminu Mohammed – 3 goals this season – and Daniel Lomotey failed to glitter and not even the introduction of Richard Danso in the second half could make the difference for Klavs Rasmussen’s side as WAFA never really appeared dangerous in the final third of the opponent despite dominating the midfield play with Basiru Umar and Prosper Ahiabu having bunch of the possession but that could not be translated into goalscoring opportunities for their men up front.
Sharks continue to defend their goal as Ishmael Hamond and Ofoe Fotsu were solid as rock at the back. WAFA pressed and pressed but things didn’t work.
In the 65th minute Elmina Sharks increased their tally when Daniel Obeng – at the far post – struck a rebound into Richmon Ayi’s net after WAFA failed to clear their lines from another freekick taken by Mpong.
The floodlights at the Babayara suddenly went off just after Sharks’s second goals but after 48 minutes of wait the lights were fixed and the game continued but the scoreline remained 2-0 as WAFA were beaten for the first time this season.
