Ghana’s Black Queens are bracing for a do-or-die encounter against Tanzania on Monday in their final Group C match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. Only a win will keep their hopes alive in the tournament and ease mounting pressure from supporters back home.
After a disappointing start—losing 2-0 to reigning champions South Africa and settling for a 1-1 draw against Mali—the Queens have just one point from two games and sit at the bottom of the group alongside Tanzania. Both teams are desperate for victory, while South Africa and Mali lead the group with four points each.
Despite taking the lead through Doris Boaduwaa in the draw with Mali, Ghana failed to maintain their advantage, further fuelling concerns over the team’s readiness and competitive edge at this level.
Monday’s clash will not be easy. Tanzania’s Twiga Stars have shown promise in the tournament, pushing South Africa to the brink before conceding a late equaliser. With both teams eyeing a spot in the quarter-finals, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
A win for Ghana would see them finish with four points and remain in contention to qualify either as group runners-up or one of the best third-placed teams. For the Black Queens, it’s a final chance to prove their worth and reignite belief among fans by booking a place in the knockout stage.
