The Black Satellites began their 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign with a 4-2 defeat to defending champions Nigeria in an entertaining Group B encounter at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Flying Eagles made a blistering start to the contest, taking an early lead and immediately putting Ghana under pressure.

However, the Black Satellites responded impressively. Captain Kelvin Nkrumah produced a perfectly weighted through ball to Mohammed Zaidan, who kept his composure to slot home the equaliser and restore parity for Ghana.

Nigeria regained the lead shortly afterwards through a deflected effort before extending their advantage from the penalty spot to take a commanding 3-1 lead into the halftime break.

Maxwell Konadu’s side emerged from the interval with renewed purpose and reduced the deficit when captain Kelvin Nkrumah confidently converted from the penalty spot to make it 3-2 and revive Ghana’s hopes of a comeback.

But the defending champions had the final say, restoring their two-goal cushion with another successful penalty to seal an impressive 4-2 victory and collect all three points.

Despite the defeat, the Black Satellites produced several encouraging attacking moments and displayed the resilience and determination that will be crucial as the tournament progresses.

Ghana will now shift focus to a must-win Group B clash against Burkina Faso on Thursday, July 30, before wrapping up the group stage against Togo on Sunday, August 2. With two matches remaining, the Black Satellites remain determined to revive their campaign and secure a place in the knockout stage.

Although Ghana has already qualified automatically for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as hosts, the WAFU B U-20 Championship provides an important opportunity for Maxwell Konadu’s team to build momentum, strengthen team chemistry and gain valuable competitive experience ahead of the continental tournament on home soil.
