Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has joined the growing calls for the Baba Yara Stadium pitch to be upgraded to meet international standards.
His comments came after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Angola, which ended the Black Stars’ remarkable 24-year unbeaten run at the stadium.
The poor state of the pitch has drawn criticism, including from Angola’s head coach Pedro Goncalves, who also voiced his displeasure despite his team’s victory. The condition of the field has become a central issue ahead of Angola’s upcoming Group F clash against Sudan, with both teams tied on three points.
In his post-match press conference, Addo emphasized the need for immediate improvements to the playing surface. “I don’t like to do this but the pitch to be honest, the guys did really well in the second half to control the game. We have to work on the pitch to get better because it is very difficult and also because mistakes can happen.”
Ghana now turns its focus to their crucial next match against Niger on September 9 in Morocco, as they aim to get their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign back on track.
