Former Ghana international Sammy Kuffour has voiced his disapproval of how the Black Stars captaincy has been handled over the years, calling for consistency in decision-making to prevent unnecessary tension within the squad.
The leadership of the national team has been a subject of debate across different generations, with the latest development seeing Jordan Ayew appointed as captain, despite Thomas Partey being initially named. Prior to this, Mohammed Kudus and Alexander Djiku were also linked to the role, while substantive captain Andre Ayew has yet to officially retire.
Kuffour cited the controversial 2019 decision to strip Asamoah Gyan of the captaincy before the Africa Cup of Nations, with Andre Ayew taking over. He believes such abrupt changes disrupt team unity.
“We make [Black Stars captaincy] too complicated. It wasn’t the right decision to take the armband from Asamoah Gyan. As part of the NC committee, I said, ‘Let Gyan remain captain since he had only a few months left.’ We didn’t need to create tension for Dede or make Gyan feel isolated. A coach has to choose the [Black Stars] captain, and not the FA,” Kuffour told Sporty FM.
Despite the ongoing debate, Jordan Ayew has made a strong start as captain, leading Ghana to two impressive victories over Chad and Madagascar, contributing one goal and four assists in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
