Egypt national team midfielder, Mohamed Elneny, said that they need to learn from their loss to Senegal in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Egypt’s World Cup dreams were shattered following a penalty shootout defeat to Senegal that saw Mohamed Salah, Ahmed Sayed Zizo, and Mostafa Mohamed all miss from the spot.
This was the second time the Pharaohs lost to the Teranga Lions in a span of two months, after they lost to them in the AFCON final back in February.
Elneny, who started the home and away legs as well as the continental final, addressed the team in the dressing room after the final whislte.
The Arsenal midfielder expressed his sadness following the defeat, but said they need to learn and move on.
“We have the right to be sad. The players played like men and did their best,” Elneny said in a video published by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
“This was our dream and we need to be sad for not accomplishing it. We need to rebuild from here and the coming period will be better. Most importantly, we need to learn from today’s lesson,” he added.
