What’s next for Emerse Faé after his historic spell with Ivory Coast?

Emerse Faé’s departure as head coach of the Ivory Coast national team marks the end of one of the most remarkable coaching stories in recent African football history. With his contract officially expired and not renewed by the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF), the 41-year-old tactician now becomes one of the most sought-after coaches on the continent.

Faé leaves the Elephants with his reputation at an all-time high after transforming a struggling side into African champions. He took charge during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations under extraordinary circumstances after the dismissal of Jean-Louis Gasset, inheriting a team that had suffered a humiliating group-stage defeat and was on the brink of elimination.

Against all odds, Faé masterminded one of the greatest turnarounds in AFCON history. Under his leadership, Ivory Coast eliminated defending champions Senegal in the Round of 16, overcame Mali in a dramatic quarter-final despite playing with ten men for much of the match, defeated DR Congo in the semi-finals, and came from behind to beat Nigeria 2-1 in the final to lift the AFCON trophy in front of their home fans.

The victory secured Ivory Coast’s third Africa Cup of Nations title, adding to their triumphs in 1992 and 2015, while making Faé the first Ivorian coach in decades to lead the Elephants to continental glory. His tactical awareness, composure under pressure and ability to inspire his players earned widespread praise from football fans and pundits across Africa and beyond.

Following the AFCON success, Faé remained in charge of the national team, overseeing the transition into a new cycle while maintaining Ivory Coast’s position among Africa’s elite. He continued integrating emerging talents with experienced players, creating a balanced squad capable of competing at the highest level. His emphasis on discipline, tactical organisation and unity became defining features of his tenure.

Now, with his time as Ivory Coast coach officially over, attention turns to what lies ahead. Given his achievements, Faé is expected to attract significant interest from top clubs and national teams across Africa, the Middle East and Europe. His success on the international stage has demonstrated that he can thrive in high-pressure environments and deliver results against some of the continent’s strongest opponents.

A move to a leading African club could see him compete in the CAF Champions League, while another national team appointment would allow him to continue building on his impressive international coaching résumé. There is also growing belief that European clubs could view him as an ambitious young manager capable of making the step into club football on the continent.

At just 41 years old, Emerse Faé still has many years ahead of him in management. His remarkable achievements with the Elephants have elevated him into the ranks of Africa’s most respected coaches, and wherever he chooses to continue his career, expectations will be high.

Although his chapter with Ivory Coast has come to an end, Faé departs as a national hero whose leadership, resilience and tactical brilliance delivered one of the greatest success stories in African football history. His next appointment is likely to be closely watched, with many expecting him to continue his rise as one of the continent’s finest coaching talents.
