“Where is the money coming from?” – George Afriyie questions source of GFA’s GHC1 million support for Ghana Premier League clubs

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has questioned the source of funds behind the GHC1 million financial support announced for each Ghana Premier League club ahead of the new season.

GFA President Kurt Okraku announced the package during the Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram on August 20, 2026.

The support follows a similar payment made to clubs last season, which was reportedly funded by the government through the Adesa Productions Limited (APL) broadcast partnership.

However, Afriyie believes club officials should have demanded clarity on the origin of the latest funds before accepting the announcement.

Speaking on Sporty Breakfast, he said:

“I am worried that club administrators failed to scrutinize the GFA’s documents before attending congress.”

He added:

“If the GFA president says he’s going to give each club GHC1 million, the first question I expect Hearts and Kotoko to ask is, where is the money coming from?”

Afriyie further questioned whether the government was behind the latest funding and why the GFA had not publicly acknowledged its contribution if that was the case.

“If the GHC1 million to each club is coming from government, then why is the GFA not giving the government credit?” he asked.

The former GFA executive also called for greater transparency from the football governing body, insisting the public deserves to know the source of the financial package.

“As of today, the GFA has failed to tell the sporting public where the money came from. In Kurt Okraku’s manifesto, he says transparency is key but today we sit here and we don’t know where the money is coming from,” Afriyie said.

The GFA is yet to publicly provide further details on the funding structure behind the latest support package for Ghana Premier League clubs.
