Kwesi Donsu, the captain of Medeama SC, is setting his sights on the CAF Champions League after winning the Ghana Premier League. He firmly believes that they can achieve success in the tournament as well.
Over the weekend, the Mauves and Yellows were crowned Ghanaian champions for the first time in their history. They secured the title by defeating Tamale City 3-0 in their final match, accumulating a total of 60 points.
With the championship victory behind them, Medeama SC is now targeting the Champions League. They will soon begin their preparations for the tournament and have received generous financial support from their headline sponsors, Goldfields Ghana, throughout their campaign.
In an interview on Akoma FM in Kumasi, Kwesi Donsu expressed his optimism about the team’s chances in the Champions League. He emphasized that Ghanaian clubs are capable of winning the tournament and should not settle for mere participation or aiming for the group stages. He also mentioned that Medeama has achieved significant results in their previous continental campaigns.
According to Donsu, the Ghanaian league boasts talented players who are on par with those from other African countries and clubs. He acknowledged that there may be some areas where improvement is needed, but he has confidence in the management and board of Medeama to implement the necessary measures for success.
Donsu concluded by stating that winning the Africa Champions League is a realistic goal for Medeama, and the team will continue to work hard towards achieving it.
“I sometimes don’t understand why some people think Ghanaian clubs can’t win the Africa Champions league, we should not aim just to add up to the numbers or to target only the group stages.
“Remember Medeama has been in Africa before and we got some huge results.”
“Our league is blessed with top quality players who are equally similar to those playing in other African countries and clubs. We are only behind in some few areas and I believe management and the board of Medeama will put up the right procedures that will help us make history.”
“Winning the Africa champions league is possible for Medeama and we will keep working hard for it.”
The last time a Ghanaian club won a continental trophy was during the 2004/05 season when Hearts of Oak triumphed in the inaugural CAF Confederations Cup, defeating their arch-rivals, Asante Kotoko, in the final.
