Black Stars head coach, Carlos Queiroz, believes Ghana will continue to grow stronger as the tournament progresses after beginning their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought victory over Panama.

Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 win in their opening Group L match, thanks to a late goal from Caleb Yirenkyi. The forward calmly converted a cross from Brandon Thomas-Asante in the closing stages of the game to hand the Black Stars all three points and a positive start to their World Cup journey.

Speaking after the match, Queiroz expressed satisfaction with the team’s development and insisted that the players are steadily adapting to a new tactical system designed to maximize their strengths.

“We are developing well as a team,” Queiroz said. “We are operating with a different system, and our attacking approach is built around the qualities and characteristics of our players.”

The experienced coach stressed that the Black Stars are committed to playing an exciting brand of football based on pace, directness, and attacking intent.

“We want to play vertical football with speed and intensity,” he explained. “Step by step, the players will continue to improve and build a stronger understanding with one another.”

Following the victory, Ghana sit second in Group L behind England, who opened their campaign with an impressive 4-2 win over Croatia.

The Black Stars now face their biggest test of the group stage when they take on England at Gillette Stadium on June 23, before wrapping up their group matches against Croatia four days later.

With three valuable points already secured, Ghana have placed themselves in a strong position as they seek to advance to the knockout stages for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Queiroz remains optimistic that the team’s performances will continue to improve as the players become more comfortable with the system and strengthen their understanding on the pitch.
