Co-hosts Canada opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field in Toronto, earning their first-ever point in a World Cup opener.
Bosnia started brighter and came close early through Amar Memić and Jovo Lukić before taking the lead in the 21st minute. From Ivan Bašić’s corner, Sead Kolašinac flicked the ball on and Lukić reacted quickest at the goal line to score his first international goal.
Canada pushed for a response but struggled for clear chances in the first half, with Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi both denied despite promising openings.
The hosts improved after the break and were twice denied by heroic goal-line clearances, first from Kolašinac and later from Nikola Katić, as Bosnia held firm under pressure.
However, Canada finally found a breakthrough in the 81st minute when substitute Cyle Larin fired home from close range after a clever assist from Promise David, sparking celebrations in Toronto.
Both sides searched for a late winner but settled for a draw, with Canada extending their unbeaten run to nine matches while Bosnia moved to six straight draws in normal time.
Canada now face Qatar in Vancouver, while Bosnia meet Switzerland in their next Group B fixtures.
