Switzerland and Colombia will lock horns in a fascinating Round of 16 encounter at BC Place in Vancouver on Tuesday, with both nations aiming to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Swiss arrive in confident mood after a convincing 2-0 victory over Algeria in the Round of 32, while Colombia edged past Ghana 1-0 to continue their impressive unbeaten run at the tournament.

Match Preview

Switzerland have steadily grown into the competition after an underwhelming start. Murat Yakin’s side opened their campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Qatar but have since found their rhythm, recording three consecutive victories to emerge as one of Europe’s most consistent teams in the knockout stages.

Their turnaround began with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, where second-half substitutes Johan Manzambi and Ruben Vargas transformed the contest as all five goals arrived after the 74th minute.

That impressive display earned both players starting roles in Switzerland’s final Group B fixture against co-hosts Canada, a match they won 2-1 to secure top spot in the group.

The duo continued to impress against Algeria in the Round of 32, with Manzambi setting up Breel Embolo’s opening goal inside the first 10 minutes before the Swiss comfortably sealed qualification.

Switzerland’s growing confidence, defensive organisation and ability to control games have made them one of the tournament’s surprise packages as they chase a place in the last eight.

However, Tuesday presents their biggest challenge yet.

Colombia have been among the standout teams at the World Cup, entering the contest unbeaten in their last six matches across all competitions, with five victories and one draw.

Néstor Lorenzo’s side topped Group K after wins over DR Congo and Uzbekistan before holding Portugal to a goalless draw, a match in which they thought they had snatched victory only for Davinson Sánchez’s stoppage-time effort to be ruled out for offside.

They followed that with a disciplined 1-0 victory over Ghana in the Round of 32, thanks to Jhon Arias’ early strike, despite losing striker Jhon Córdoba to injury just minutes into the contest.

Colombia’s defensive solidity has become one of their biggest strengths, having kept clean sheets in each of their last three matches while conceding just once throughout the tournament.

With attacking threats such as Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez capable of producing moments of brilliance, the South Americans will be confident of continuing their impressive run.

Team News

Switzerland have a couple of injury concerns ahead of the clash.

Midfielder Michel Aebischer remains doubtful after training individually as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury, while defender Luca Jaquez is also racing against time to overcome a similar problem.

Should both players miss out, captain Granit Xhaka is expected to partner Remo Freuler in midfield, with Johan Manzambi operating in an advanced playmaking role behind striker Breel Embolo. Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi are expected to continue their partnership at the heart of defence.

Colombia, meanwhile, will be without striker Jhon Córdoba after he suffered a hamstring injury against Ghana that has ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament.

His absence is expected to hand Luis Suárez a starting role after the Sporting CP forward impressed from the bench and provided the assist for Arias’ winning goal in the previous round.

Predicted Lineups

Switzerland:
Kobel; Zakaria, Elvedi, Akanji, Rodriguez; Xhaka, Freuler; Ndoye, Manzambi, Vargas; Embolo.

Colombia:
Vargas; Munoz, Sanchez, Lucumi, Mojica; Lerma, Arias, Puerta; James Rodriguez, Suarez, Luis Diaz.

Kick-off Time

Fixture: Switzerland vs Colombia
Competition: FIFA World Cup 2026 – Round of 16
Venue: BC Place, Vancouver, Canada
Date: Tuesday
Kick-off: Tuesday evening (local time)

Prediction

This promises to be one of the closest contests in the Round of 16.

Switzerland have shown remarkable improvement after their slow start and possess the organisation and experience to frustrate any opponent. However, Colombia have looked more balanced throughout the tournament, combining defensive discipline with pace and creativity in attack.

If Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez can dictate play in the final third, Colombia may have just enough quality to edge another tight encounter and continue their march toward the quarter-finals.

Prediction: Switzerland 1-2 Colombia.
